The Soul Resilience of Howard Thurman

Howard Thurman was the religious guide for many key figures in the Civil Rights movement and for contemporary spiritually-oriented social activists. His grandmother was enslaved for 20 years, and he considers her one of his most significant teachers because of her resilience and practical wisdom. Thurman, too, is a wisdom figure for many of us seeking to understand ways to be passionate about our social activism and grounded spiritually. He was a nature mystic, Quaker, and one of the spiritual giants of our time. In 1944 he went to San Francisco to co-found one of America’s first intentionally multi-race, multi-faith centers of worship, the Church for the Fellowship for All Peoples.
