TPUUF holds service and candlelight vigil in support of Transgender Day of Remembrance, Resistance & Resilience

Transgender Day Of Remembrance, Resistance, & Resilience with Candlelight Vigil
The 20th of November 2018 will mark day of the 19th Annual International Transgender Day of Remembrance and will be the 13th successive year we have observed the TDoR at TPUUF.
The Welcoming Congregation Team of the Social Action Committee working jointly with the Worship Committee will hold a service and candlelight vigil for the Transgender Day of Remembrance, Resistance and Resilience (TDoRRR) on Tuesday, November 20, 2017 at 7:00 PM. This year we are continuing to expand the scope for our gathering. We will commemorate with Remembrance for those lives taken in the past year. We will also pledge our fight for Trans* and Gender Non-Conforming people’s rights with Resistance and we will celebrate the Resilience of this strong group of people as the struggle continues for rights and non-discrimination.
The event is held internationally every November in memory of Rita Hester, whose murder on November 28, 1998 kicked off the Remembering Our Dead project and began the tradition of holding candlelight vigils.
At the time of writing this article there were 22 known transgender people killed in the United States in 2018. This includes one woman killed in Philadelphia, Shantee Tucker. Most were transgender people of color (TPOC). The need to halt this epidemic is critical.
For 13 years, the TPUUF community has consistently held a light up to this useless and senseless loss of Blessed life. Everyone is welcome to join us in this service and will be appropriate for all ages. Please join TPUUF members, friends, and concerned public to participate in this service and vigil. We will celebrate the lives of these transgender people that have been lost, we will pledge to continue to resist transphobia and we will celebrate those trans* and gnc people living with us for their resilience as they continue to enrich our world.
The vigil will be followed with some light refreshments.
