Health-Care Weekend at TPUUF

Thomas Paine Unitarian Universalist Fellowship will host a pair of events the weekend of Aug 7-9 related to the ongoing health-care debate:

Friday, Aug. 7: A viewing of Michael Moore’s film, Sicko. Starts at 7 p.m.
Sunday, Aug. 9: A workshop to cut through the posturing and explain what’s at stake in the current health-care debate, with Chuck Pennachio, the executive director of Healthcare4AllPA. Workshop runs from 1 to 2:30 p.m.

See the film that major health insurance companies didn’t want you to see! Michael’s Moore’s Sicko, which examines the healthcare coverage in the U.S. and compares it to that available in Canada, France, Great Britain, and Cuba. Refreshments will be available and a discussion will follow the film.

February 5: Reflections on a dialogue: Belief or Nonbelief?, Umberto Eco and Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini

In 1995, the Milan newspaper Corriere della sera decided to run an unusual feature, an attempt to edify their readers through a frank exchange between two Italian intellectuals: Novelist and professor of semiotics Umberto Eco, and Carlo Maria Martini, the Cardinal of Milan. The purpose of this exchange would be a mutual exploration of issues important to the modern world, but issues open to philosophical dissent between the “believer and the nonbeliever,” or more specifically, the Catholic and the secular humanist. The dialogue took place in a series of four letters, each letter and its subsequent response touching upon a single topic. Yvon Kennon will reflect on what this dialogue can teach UUs... at least she’ll try!

February 12: Adventures in Africa

Becky was a teacher in Western Africa and will share her journey with us.

February 19: Equality – What does it mean to you?
- Welcoming Congregation Team/Guest Speaker: Ted Martin, Equality Pennsylvania/Bill Weber Coordinator
Some of us take it for granted: Equal access to housing, jobs, safety in schools, and the right to commit to a partner with legal protections. Some of us don’t enjoy those same rights. Ted Martin will tell us what Equality PA has been doing and what is on the agenda for Equality for all people in Pennsylvania.

February 26: American Indian Religion and Mythology
- TPUUF Members, George & Mary Lynne Carlisle
We will explore some Native American religions and beliefs.
